War Souls

War is usually recorded through commanders, battles, borders, and losses. Animals appear at the edge of those records, although people depended on them to carry messages and supplies, find the injured, detect danger, protect food, and offer companionship. War Souls follows thirteen animal stories connected to those human histories.

The stories range from the Western Front and the London Blitz to Korea and the Yangtze River. Some are supported by medal citations, military records, museum collections, and the recollections of people who served beside the animals. Others have acquired legends that the surviving evidence cannot fully sustain. This archive keeps those differences visible. Oscar’s three-ship itinerary is a disputed naval legend; Cher Ami’s wounded message flight is documented, while his identification as the Lost Battalion’s famous messenger remains uncertain. Their stories are no less worth reading because the record has limits.

The album’s title points to loyalty, fear, endurance, and memory. The articles here begin with the history. Each can be read independently of the music, and each closes with a short note on the angle that inspired its corresponding Mortal Archive track. Together they remember animals who did not choose war, and the people who lived and served beside them.
